The 2020 ISJAC Giving Campaign will run from Monday October 19th through Thursday October 29th. This annual event is the primary fundraising initiative of our organization and helps provide the financial resources for our programming.
Please see letter from ISJAC President Chuck Owen below:
Dear Friends and Members of the ISJAC Community,
What a Year!
When I wrote to you at this time last year, we were coming off an incredible high from the 2019 Jazz Composers’ Symposium. We were inspired, encouraged, and connected…recognizing, more than ever, the power of a united community of jazz composers.
And now? Well, we’ve been battered, challenged, physically isolated, and largely deprived of making music and, in many cases, a living. According to a recent article, more arts/entertainment jobs have been lost during the pandemic than in any other sector. Many of our members have been deeply impacted, and nearly all of us have lost significant income, performances, commissions, etc.
It’s amidst that backdrop that I come to you – hat in hand – asking for your contributions to our shared mission. Yikes!!! What an uncomfortable task! Look, as most of you know, I’m a composer/educator…NOT a development officer. I took on this role because I believe in the vision for ISJAC. It’s ambitious, bold, inclusive, and most importantly – it’s needed!!
As a young nonprofit arts association our resources are minimal (sadly we didn’t qualify for any of the COVID relief provided to more established arts organizations) and we depend upon the efforts of our volunteer Board and curators to continue to develop composer resources and move our programming forward. In spite of that, look at what we’ve launched in the midst of this pandemic:
- Emergency ISJAC COVID-19 Relief Commissions to 16 individuals
- Inaugural ISJAC/USF Prize for Emerging Black Composers
- ISJAC Shorts – a new series of videos to allow our members to better share their projects and thoughts
And, though we’ve been forced to postpone the planned 2021 Jazz Composers’ Symposium in Austin until 2022, we are working diligently to offer up a new and very exciting event: Un[chart]ed Territory – an ISJAC Zoomfest this March.
We want to do MORE!!!
And, we CAN do more!
